Job Purpose:

Assistant General Counsel serves as a member of the University’s Office of General Counsel providing legal advice and services to the University’s administration through various departments and units. This is an on-site position in Spokane, Washington, on the campus of Gonzaga University. This position works under the general direction of the General Counsel and is assigned four primary areas of responsibility: (1) contract review and drafting; (2) state and federal regulatory compliance advice; (3) higher education law matters as assigned; and (4) policy development. This role also involves supporting the University’s contract life cycle management system and compliance programs, providing training to university staff and faculty, and providing legal advice and services regarding other areas as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • 30% - Contract Review and Drafting.
    • Review, revise, draft, and negotiate various contracts, including service agreements, real estate, construction, goods and services, and technology.
  • 20% - Compliance Legal Advice.
    • Provide regulatory compliance advice and assistance to University employees responsible for specific areas of compliance.
  • 25% - Other Higher Education Law Matters Legal Advice.
    • Provide legal advice and assistance on other higher education law matters as assigned by the General Counsel. 
  • 10% - Policy Development.
    • Assist and advise client in policy drafting and development.
  • 5% - Training.
    • Develop and deliver training on relevant legal issues to University constituents and groups. 
  • 5% - Train Law Clerks.
    • Train and oversee legal externs and law clerks. Lead the Office of General Counsel in the absence of the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel. 
  • 5% - Collaboration.
    • Collaborate with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel to provide advice and counsel to the President, Board of Trustees, and senior-level administrators, and engage and supervise outside counsel effectively. 
  • Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department

Educational Requirement:

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

At least 2 years of relevant experience.

Certifications and/or Licensures:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited ABA law school.
  • Current Active Member of Washington State Bar Association.
  • Strong academic background.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Substantial knowledge of higher education regulatory compliance best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to meticulously review, analyze, and provide accurate and timely legal advice and services pertaining to a diverse portfolio of higher education law legal matters.
  • Strong sense of integrity and ethical judgment in handling sensitive client matters and related legal issues.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey complex legal issues and related information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to adapt to changing client needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and State of Washington laws and regulations related to grants, contracts, and higher education regulatory compliance matters.
  • Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and legal research skills.
  • Legal experience working in higher education.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $116,625 - $120,000

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): $116,625

Midpoint Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): $155,500

Maximum Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): $194,375
