Job Purpose:
The Biology Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA is searching for an engaging, equity-minded teacher-scholar to join our teaching-centered department in a full-time Lecturer position beginning August 16, 2025. We are looking for a broadly trained colleague with research expertise in ecology and teaching experience in ecology, physiology, biodiversity, and introductory biology. We are committed to pursuing excellence in teaching by creating engaging, inclusive learning environments for undergraduate students, and are looking for candidates who share that commitment. Teaching responsibilities will include the introductory biology courses (Information Flow in Biological Systems and Energy Flow in Biological Systems), a first-year microbiology-based lab course in phage discovery (an HHMI SEA-PHAGES course), 200-level lecture and lab courses in ecology and physiology & biodiversity, and an upper-division seminar course on an advanced topic of the Lecturer’s interest. The teaching load will be the equivalent of 24 credits per year-- typically 2 lecture courses and 2-3 lab sections per semester. Some release time may be negotiated for other activities.
Ideal candidates will have experience creating and implementing open-ended laboratory exercises, and an interest in serving as the lead faculty overseeing the lab curricula in the BIOL 205L and 206L physiology & biodiversity and ecology lab courses. They will also have experience teaching undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds and identities, including those historically marginalized in the sciences (e.g., first-generation students, students from low-income families, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities).
The position is a long-term, renewable, non-tenure-track teaching faculty appointment. With time in the position, a Lecturer will take on additional responsibilities, including advising students, supporting the department and university through service, and engaging in professional activities that that inform their teaching, enhance student educational experience, and help them to remain current in their field of biology. After six years, a Lecturer may apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer, and later, to the rank of Professor of Practice.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Biology or a related field.
- At least one-year (1) of experience teaching undergraduate students in relevant courses.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of engaging, inclusive teaching at the undergraduate level that includes designing and teaching lecture courses.
- Evidence of the design and implementation of open-ended, inquiry-based lab exercises that engage students in the elements of scientific research.
- Evidence of effectiveness in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, experiences, and identities, including those historically underrepresented in the sciences.

(3) A cover letter that summarizes the above and describes the candidate’s understanding of and commitment to the university’s mission.
