Job Purpose:

A Gonzaga University Security Officer oversees the safety and security of campus property, students, staff, faculty, and visitors. A Gonzaga Security Officer participates in and protects an educational, mission-driven community that develops students to be leaders and serve the common good.

Essential Functions:

  • 40% - Patrol campus property and surrounding area -
    • Deters criminal activity
    • Maintains visibility
    • Observes and monitors campus conditions
    • Verifies the security of campus facilities
    • Conducts walk-throughs of campus facilities.
    • Monitors AEDs/bluelight phones, vehicle maintenance, bicycle registration, and property room - (Essential)
  • 30% - Services -
    • Provides key services, escorts and jump starts. 
    • Provides assistance to students, staff, and faculty.
    • Found Property (Crowdfind) - (Essential)
  • 25% - Enforcement -
    • Enforces Parking Rules and Regulations
    • Investigates and documents any violation of the University's policies.
    • Investigates and documents any violation of the Student Conduct Codes.
    • Investigates and documents any abnormal activity. - (Essential)
  • Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department

Educational Requirement:

High School Diploma or GED

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

1 year

In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education. 

Certifications and/or Licensures:

Valid driver's license and excellent driving record (two or more moving violations, or one serious moving violation may disqualify an individual from operating a university vehicle.)

Ability to obtain or possess a basic first-aid and CPR certification.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to successfully pass a background check consistent with university policy.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write clear, accurate, and timely incident reports.
  • Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to patrol campus on foot and by vehicle for extended periods, including climbing stairs, walking long distances, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use security systems, reporting software, radios, and mobile devices.
  • Ability to support and uphold Gonzaga University’s mission and values in a diverse educational environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years college course work in a related field and/or two years work experience in law enforcement/security/public safety.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Work experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed response practices
  • Experience conducting investigations and preparing detailed reports.

Physical & On-Campus Requirements:

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week

Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

Walking - Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks: Daily (>75% of time)

Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight (e.g., 50 pounds): Rarely (1%-49% of time)

Attention to Detail - Ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods: Daily (>75% of time)

Problem-Solving - Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively: Daily (>75% of time)

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $25 per hour

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): $20.24

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): $25.28

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): $30.34
