Job Purpose:

A Gonzaga University Security Officer oversees the safety and security of campus property, students, staff, faculty, and visitors. A Gonzaga Security Officer participates in and protects an educational, mission-driven community that develops students to be leaders and serve the common good.

Essential Functions:

  • 40% - Patrol campus property and surrounding area
    • Deters criminal activity
    • Maintains visibility
    • Observes and monitors campus conditions
    • Verifies the security of campus facilities
    • Conducts walk-throughs of campus facilities.
    • Monitors AEDs/bluelight phones, vehicle maintenance, bicycle registration, and property room - (Essential)
  • 25% - Enforcement
    • Enforces Parking Rules and Regulations
    • Investigates and documents any violation of the University's policies.
    • Investigates and documents any violation of the Student Conduct Codes.
    • Investigates and documents any abnormal activity. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Services
    • Provides key services, escorts, and jump starts.
    • Provides assistance to students, staff, and faculty.
    • Found Property (Crowdfind) - (Essential)
  • Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department

Educational Requirement:

Vocational, Associates, or Technical Degree

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

1 year

In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education. 

Certifications and/or Licensures:

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).

Skills & Abilities:

  • One years college course work in a related field and/or two years work experience in law enforcement/security/public safety.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • Ability to pass a background check and any required campus safety training.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergency or stressful situations
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Basic computer skills for incident reporting and communication.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including walking, standing, and patrolling for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience in security, law enforcement, military, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a higher education or campus setting.
  • Familiarity with campus safety protocols, emergency response, or access control systems.
  • Training in de-escalation techniques or conflict resolution.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.

Physical & On-Campus Requirements:

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 4 days/week

Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

Walking - Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks: Daily (>75% of time)

Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight (e.g., 50 pounds): Daily (>75% of time)

Attention to Detail - Ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods: Daily (>75% of time)

Problem-Solving - Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively: Daily (>75% of time)

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $25.00/HR

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): $20.00

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): $23.50

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): $27.05
