Title: Vehicle Mechanic/Maintenance Technician

Job Purpose:

Perform any combination of the motor vehicle mechanic duties described in the essential functions to maintain and repair University property and vehicles using a variety of resources. Work in a variety of settings, including dormitories, food service areas, administrative offices, academic buildings and outdoors. Perform related paperwork as required.

Essential Functions:

• 85% - Fleet Vehicle Mechanic
  • Plan and perform vehicle mechanic duties in a timely manner according to schedules, utilizing knowledge of University maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Operate and repair powered units such as forklifts, step vans, backhoe, lawnmowers, and high reach bucket truck.
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Repair malfunctions and perform preventive maintenance on all types of automotive and industrial equipment including light to medium-duty trucks, vans, forklifts, snowplows, golf carts, EZ-go, toro, Kawasaki, and refuse equipment.
  • Repair carburetors on gasoline fuel systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as changing filters, cleaning, and lubrication of operating equipment, belt changing, and safety checklists.
  • Use testing equipment, including engine analyzers, electrical system testers, and various hand and power tools used in automotive repair.
  • Make repairs using electrical and gas welding equipment; repair of metal chairs, grounds equipment, snowplows, custodial equipment, and minor fabrication, as needed.
  • Clean shop area and equipment as needed.
  • Operate hand and power tools in a skilled manner; drills, welders (stick and wire feed), saws, and maintain an inventory of normal vehicle mechanic tools and other shop equipment as needed.
  • Analyze vehicle repair and maintenance repair situations.
  • Determine appropriate action to be taken, within limits of standard practice. Identify potential problems that require corrective action.
  • Work independently and in a team setting to complete daily activities according to work schedule received from the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Procure necessary parts and equipment utilizing University resources (warehouse) and appropriate outside vendors.
  • Fill in after-hours and on weekends as required.
  • Subject to after-hour callbacks for emergencies and seasonal shift changes.
  • Essential functions listed here require the physical and environmental demands in order to carry out these duties.

• 5% - General Maintenance
  • Perform general painting, plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs, such as unstopping clogged sinks, drains and garbage disposals, resetting circuit breakers; makes minor repairs to walls and doors; paints interior and exterior walls and minor furniture repair.
  • Minor roof patching, repair, cleaning of roof surfaces, and gutters of debris.
  • Install windows, glass, screens, and hardware as related to windows and doors.
  • Repair kitchen equipment, including dishwashers, disposals, and other machinery.
  • Complete necessary paperwork in order to document all repairs, preventive maintenance, and safety checklist.
  • Perform cost estimating of installations and repairs, project materials and labor needed. Drive service van/truck as required, load and unload materials and supplies.
  • No formal supervisory responsibility, but may act as lead worker.

• 10% - Additional Duties as Assigned

Educational Requirement:

High School Diploma or GED

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

5 years

In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education. 

Certifications and/or Licensures:

Appropriate trades school education or course work may substitute for the minimum years required.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: 54,560-63,700

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): 53920

Midpoint Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): 67400

Maximum Salary (Annualized 12 months and 40 hours/week): 80880

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 25.93

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 32.40

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 38.88
