Job Purpose:

Essential Functions:

• 90% - Journeyman Electrician
  • Install, maintain and operate campus electrical systems including 120/208 volt, 277/480 volt, and 7620/13,200 volt systems and associated equipment.
  • Use electrical journeyman level maintenance and repair procedures including preventive maintenance, breakdown repair, and troubleshooting, construction, installation and fabrication techniques typical in trade.
  • Perform mathematical computations of the electrical trade.
  • Fill in after-hours and on weekends as required.
  • Subject to after-hour calls for emergencies and seasonal shift changes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area and surrounding areas at all times.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory codes and requirements such as National Electric Codes and the City of Spokane electrical and building codes.
  • Maintain and repair of campus fire alarm systems.
  • Maintain and repair of campus electronic access control systems.
  • Maintain and repair motor relays, magnetic starters, transformers, altering or installation of any associated wiring.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the campus electrical systems.
  • Install electrical circuits and panels based on current code requirements.
  • Understand the electrical symbols and interpretations of buildings and electrical prints.
  • Inspect and test electrical lighting and power circuits and equipment.
  • Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment, using suitable testing instruments.
  • Examine and test electrical systems to locate obvious faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn components.
  • Implement planned preventive maintenance activities to ensure prolonged life and usefulness of operating equipment and facilities and to minimize breakdowns or failures of such equipment and facilities.
  • This shall include a medium-voltage (7620/13,200 volts) distribution system.
  • Use test equipment such as Volt-Ammeters, Voltage tester, Phase and Rotation testers, multimeters, etc, to troubleshoot electrical systems.
  • Operate the campus high voltage system, including replacing fuses, splicing cables, phasing of circuits, cross-connecting circuits to re-establish service during power outages.
  • Use high voltage personal protective equipment where required by code on the campus electrical system.
  • Use computers and networks to program automated lighting circuits, computer-controlled switching circuits, and other programmable lighting equipment and circuit breakers.
  • Install, maintain, operate and program variable frequency drives for motors, pumps, and fans.
  • Install, maintain, and repair engine generators, uninterruptible power supplies, automatic transfer switches, etc.
  • Complete work orders including job sheets and estimates.
  • Perform cost accounting of project materials and labor time.
  • The conversion of conceptual ideas, identified by a member of the community, into a cost-effective and functional end product.
  • The ability to manage projects, including design, estimating, material identification and time management.
  • Procure necessary parts and equipment utilizing University resources (warehouse) and appropriate outside vendors.
  • The ability to perform skills in other maintenance crafts.
  • Essential functions listed here require the physical and environmental demands in order to carry out these duties.

Educational Requirement:

• High School Diploma or GED

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

• 5 years
• In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education. 

Certifications and/or Licensures:

• Journeyman Electrical license.
• Valid driver's license; proven driving ability with good driving record.

Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems, equipment, and infrastructure in accordance with industry standards.
• Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve electrical issues using testing equipment, technical expertise, and systematic problem-solving techniques to minimize downtime.
• Thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), applicable state and local regulations, and safe work practices, including the use of personal protective equipment and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical schematics, construction drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to complete installations and repairs accurately.
• Ability to manage multiple work orders and projects by estimating labor and materials, prioritizing assignments, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accurate documentation.
• Ability to utilize computerized building automation systems, programmable lighting controls, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and computerized work order management systems.
• Ability to work effectively with coworkers, contractors, vendors, and members of the University community while providing professional service, communicating clearly, and supporting a safe and functional campus environment.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $27.24 - $34.03

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 27.24

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 34.03

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 40.84
