Salary Range: The internal salary range is $1,485.00/credit for MA/MS; $1,686.00/credit for Ph.D. or Terminal Degree. Labs are compensated at a rate of 1.5 credits per section.

Job Purpose:

The Department of Physics at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, is seeking instructors to teach introductory physics laboratory courses for majors and non-majors. The successful candidate will have the enthusiasm, classroom presence and skills to engage students in active learning and should be committed to pursuing excellence in teaching and promoting an inclusive learning environment. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students of all backgrounds.

Essential Functions:

  • Teaching of introductory physics lab courses, in person and on campus. All equipment will already have been set up by a colleague. - (Essential)
  • Grade lab assignments and provide feedback to students; submit mid-semester and final grades via Canvas - (Essential)
  • Hold office hours in consultation with the Physics Department Chair - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications:

-M.S. in Physics or closely related field (or equivalent)
-Evidence of teaching effectiveness, including the ability to effectively respond to the academic needs of learners from diverse backgrounds.
-Evidence of the ability to use effective classroom strategies and pedagogies to advance equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or equivalent) in physics or closely related field

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 2 days/week

Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

Walking - Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks: Daily (>75% of time)

Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight: Often (50%-75% of time)

Attention to Detail - Ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods: Daily (>75% of time)

Problem-Solving - Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively: Daily (>75% of time)
