Job Purpose:

The International Student Advisor works closely with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) team to provide quality service to students. This position is primarily responsible for advising Gonzaga’s undergraduate international students on their immigration status, support services, and well-being while at Gonzaga University.

Essential Functions:

  • 40% - Immigration Compliance
    • Primarily responsible for advising international undergraduates and their dependents on issues related to immigration, cultural, social, and academic concerns.
    • Stay informed on federal and state regulations affecting F/J immigration and best practices in the field of immigration compliance and advising. Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and a backup Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
    • Use sound judgement and discretion when interpreting U.S. immigration regulations and policies/procedures related to F/J immigration benefits such as maintenance of status, employment [Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), Academic Training (AT)] program extensions, SEVIS transfers, dependents. Accurately perform relevant actions and updates in the immigration SEVIS system.
    • Manage various technical systems including Slate, Banner, and Terra Dotta to ensure accurate data integration.
  • 20% - General Advising
    • Identify students facing barriers and provide them with support to effectively work with faculty, academic departments, and support services on campus or with community organizations.
    • Conduct semester check-ins with assigned student cohorts.
    • Support students with their applications for SSN and WA driver’s license. 
  • 20% - Support Services
    • Assist with the planning and execution of orientation, other programming such as workshops related to health insurance, employment, taxes, American culture, and campus resources.
    • Assist with ISSS events and programming, and drive vans as needed.
    • Guide international students through insurance and health systems in the United States.
    • Share on-call duties with the rest of the ISSS team 
  • 15% - Intercultural Education and Advising
    • Assist with providing intercultural training for students, faculty, and staff.
    • Advocate for international student interests on Gonzaga’s campus and in the Spokane community.
  • Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department

Educational Requirement:

Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

1 year

In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education. 

Certifications and/or Licensures:

Valid Driver's License
Valid US Passport

Skills & Abilities:

• Minimum of one (1) year of working with international students or studying abroad
• Evidence of strong interpersonal and communicative skills in English.
• Evidence of knowledge of federal laws and policies related to F-1 non-immigrant students and dependents, as well as knowledge of SEVP policies and guidance.
• Evidence of eligibility to be Designated School Official (DSO) by USCIS and Alternate Responsible Officer(ARO) with the Department of State.
• Evidenced ability to understand complex immigration regulations and how they impact students, dependents, and the institution.
• Evidenced ability to clearly communicate government regulations and University policies to international students, academic personnel, and agents to ensure compliance.
• Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and evidenced ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree, any specialization.
  • Evidence of novice overall proficiency in a second language.
  • Three (3) - Four (4) years experience working with international students.

Physical & On-Campus Requirements:

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week

Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

Walking - Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks: Often (50%-75% of time)

Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight (e.g., 50 pounds): Rarely (1%-49% of time)

Attention to Detail - Ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods: Daily (>75% of time)

Problem-Solving - Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively: Daily (>75% of time)

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $47,280 - $48,403

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 22.74

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 28.41

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 34.09
